Choosing the Right Location for your Yoga Teacher Training

An inspiring and peaceful location immersed in nature can enhance the spiritual aspect and allow you to connect deeply with yourself and your surroundings. The right setting provides an escape from the distractions of everyday life, allowing you to focus entirely on your study and personal development to embrace becoming the best version of your authentic self.

The environment around you has a profound impact on personal growth and learning during a yoga teacher training program. An accepting, open and supportive setting encourages you to explore your physical and spiritual boundaries, helping you gain a deeper understanding of yoga beyond just the physical postures, as well as gaining the teaching skills and solid foundation required to teach yoga and enhance your self practice.

Being surrounded by like-minded individuals and experienced yoga instructors and mentors can fuel motivation and dedication, leading to a more transformative and enriching learning experience for you.

How to Choose a Location for your Teacher Training

When it comes to locations there are so many options, which can be overwhelming! It is best to first start with defining your own desires and preferences, keeping in mind your budget and circumstances.

Some questions to begin with:

  • Can I take time off to study in-person or is online a better fit for me? Or a shorter part time hybrid in-person/ online course?
  • What is my budget for the course – including travel and accommodation if in-person?
  • What am I looking for in a yoga school?
  • In-Person:

    • Do I want to study locally or travel abroad?
    • What locations appeal to me for this experience?
  • Online
    • If I decide to study online, how much in-person interaction do I want from my teachers (over Zoom etc)
    • Do I require a shorter intensive experience, or a longer self-paced option?
    • Do I require mentoring and the ability to receive feedback?
    • Do I want to start teaching upon completion? Or simply deepen my own practice?

Choosing an In Person Yoga Course Location

Many aspiring yoga instructors choose to travel to yoga retreat centres in exotic destinations like Bali or India where you can immerse yourself in authentic yogic traditions and different cultures.

On the other hand, some may prefer local training centers in their own communities, appreciating the convenience and familiarity of their surroundings.

Each location offers unique benefits, and the choice depends on your individual preferences, budget, and the kind of experience you seek.

The climate and natural surroundings of the training location can significantly impact the training experience. Practicing yoga amidst diverse environments offers distinct benefits. Training in the mountains provides a refreshing and invigorating atmosphere, allowing trainees to connect with nature and find serenity in the midst of towering peaks. On the other hand, training by the beach offers a calming backdrop with the soothing sound of waves, creating a conducive environment for relaxation and reflection.

Training in such locations with rich spiritual heritage or cultural significance such as Bali, India or Sri Lanka allows participants to experience the authentic teachings of yoga from experienced gurus and immerse themselves in rituals deeply rooted in the local culture. The cultural immersion enriches the understanding of yoga philosophy and yoga history beyond just physical postures and into a way of life.

Affordability is an essential factor to consider when selecting a yoga teacher training location. Trainings can vary significantly in terms of program fees, accommodation, and daily expenses. Local training might be more budget-friendly, especially if participants can commute from home and have access to lower-cost accommodation options. On the other hand, international training may incur higher expenses, but it offers the added benefit of a life-changing experience in a new and exciting environment!

Santosha offer different locations and formats of accredited yoga teacher trainings, which allows our trainees to select the option which best suits their budget and desires:

Frequently Asked Questions About Our Bali, Byron Bay, Sri Lanka and Online 200-Hour Courses

Will I be accepted into the Santosha YTT?

Yes, we believe that all people are deserving of changing their lives! Subsequently, the only prerequisite is a sincere desire in your heart to transform and grow. If you are ready to dedicate yourself with an open heart and mind to study and practice during your time with us, we would love to have you join us – in Bali, Byron Bay, Sri Lanka or Online.

I don’t want to be a teacher – is this course for me?

Santosha courses are much more than just teacher trainings; they are a chance to personally transform and grow. Even if yoga teaching is not your goal, this yoga course will help you deepen your yoga practice, share a unique transformational experience, and be supported by open-hearted mentors and friends. If you want to transform your mind, body, and life then this yoga course is for you!

I do want to be a yoga teacher – is this course for me?

Yes, this is the one for you! The Santosha Bali, Byron Bay, Sri Lanka and Online Level 1 200-Hour YTT is a Yoga Alliance / Yoga Alliance International accredited RYT-200 training – meaning you will learn the skills to gain your certification and register as a RYT-200 yoga instructor immediately upon graduation from your Bali, Byron Bay, Sri Lanka or Online studies – qualifying you to teach in gyms and yoga studios around the world.

How proficient do I need to be at yoga to join the Santosha YTT?

During the Level 1 RYT-200 program you will have asana practice every morning and afternoon. We recommend that students have some form of asana practice and are comfortable practicing daily. An advanced practitioner is not necessarily one who can move deeply into advanced poses; it is someone who comes to the mat with a level of maturity, a willingness to learn, and an appreciation of the limits of their own body. This course is not only meant for aspiring instructors. It’s also for people who want to take their practice to a deeper level and share an incredible experience with like-minded souls.

What Style of Yoga do Santosha Teach in their Yoga School?

The Yoga we teach is an authentic ‘vini’ flow – which connects traditional hatha yoga poses in short flowing vinyasa yoga sequences. This teaching style draws from the Sri T Krishnamacharya lineage – a therapeutic and holistic approach to teaching the goal of which is to create healing and wellbeing in mind, body and breath.

As all of our teachings have been passed down through the Sri T Krishnamacharya lineage, this builds a strong and authentic foundation for your teaching and practicing, ensuring what you teach is safe and effective and from a legitimate source. You know what you are sharing is the real deal – based on authentic wisdom built upon by yogis for thousands of years.

When will I be ready to teach public classes after the YTT?

You will be ready to teach straight away once you graduate, having gained the skills, knowledge, expertise, and confidence to sequence and lead a yoga class with ease! Many of our graduates are teaching yoga online and in person all around the world.

Can I join even if I have injuries or am not that flexible?

At Santosha, we believe that yoga is for everybody and all bodies; and therefore we teach safe and sustainable practices for all yogis. You don’t need a perfect, injury-free body to be a teacher, or to join our course. Instructors who have had injuries themselves are often better at being aware of students’ limitations with flexibility or mobility and keeping them safe.

Can I join the course even if I feel nervous about teaching?

Yes, of course! It’s normal to feel hesitant about starting something new. Many of our students come into the feeling fear of teaching, public speaking, or doing something new. We take care to create a supportive and accepting space like no other you have experienced. We’ll work with you where you’re at to help you build the confidence and skills you’ll need to share what you have learned (if that’s your goal).

I am older and cannot do all the postures. Can I still join you?

At Santosha, we believe that yoga is for everybody and all bodies – and that your practice should meet you where you are at. It’s no problem if you cannot access certain poses. There is no age barrier to accessing the incredible benefits of yoga and sharing them with others through yoga teaching! We are getting an increasing number of students joining us in their 50s, 60s, and beyond on the YTT and stepping up to teach yoga – and we hope to see more!

I feel a bit nervous! Should I Still Do It?

Yes! This probably means you are ready to step into something new but you just need that extra encouragement to make the next brave step. We are here to offer this to you! You are welcome to email or WhatsApp us and let us know about anything standing in the way of following your dreams, and we can happily provide extra support – both before and during your time with us on the YTT – in a way that best suits YOUR individual nature and strengths.
