What is the Purpose of a Yoga Teacher Training Program?

The purpose of YTT is twofold. Firstly, it aims to deepen your self practice, helping you develop a deeper understanding of yoga’s physical, mental, and spiritual dimensions.

Secondly, it prepares you to become a skilled and knowledgeable yoga instructor, capable of creating safe, inclusive, and transformative experiences for your students. Through study, self-reflection, practice teaching, and mentorship, our courses provide a comprehensive foundation for you to embark on a fulfilling and rewarding journey as a teacher.

Our Santosha Level 1 yoga teacher training courses are a structured program designed to equip you with the awareness, skills, and confidence to teach yoga to others. They go beyond the practice of yoga asanas (poses) and delves into various other important aspects, including philosophy, anatomy, meditation, breathwork, sequencing, cues, and yoga teaching methodology.

Ultimately, the purpose of our training is to share the profound teachings and benefits of yoga; promoting well-being, self-discovery, and spiritual growth.

What are the Different Styles of Yoga Teacher Training courses?

Courses come in various styles and approaches, each offering a unique emphasis and perspective:

  • Hatha teacher training focuses on the foundational aspects of yoga, including asanas (physical poses), pranayama (breath control), and meditation.
  • Vinyasa teacher training emphasizes the fluid and dynamic sequencing of postures, synchronizing breath with movement.
  • Ashtanga teacher training follows a structured series of asanas, promoting strength, flexibility, and stamina.
  • Iyengar teacher training focuses on alignment, using props to support proper posture.
  • Kundalini teacher training explores the awakening of the dormant spiritual energy within through dynamic movements, breathwork, and mantra.
  • Yin Yoga teacher training delves into long-held, passive poses targeting connective tissues and promoting deep relaxation.

These are just a few examples, as there are many other styles available, each with its own principles, practices, and philosophies. When considering a course, it’s important to research and choose a style that resonates with your personal interests, goals, and teaching aspirations.

See our previous post on How to Choose the Right Yoga Teacher Training for You.

What Yoga Style will I Learn on at Santosha Yoga School?

At Santosha Yoga Institute we teach an authentic ‘vini’ flow style of yoga, which connects traditional Hatha postures in short, flowing Vinyasa sequences. This draws on the Sri T. Krishnamacharya lineage, a therapeutic and holistic approach to teaching which creates healing and well-being in mind, body, and breath.

Sri T. Krishnamacharya (1888-1989) is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in the modern practice of yoga. Hailing from India, Krishnamacharya was a renowned teacher, scholar, and healer.

Krishnamacharya’s teachings emphasize the integration of breath, movement, and meditation, focusing on the therapeutic aspects of yoga. He developed the concept of ‘Viniyoga’, an individualized approach that adapts the practice to suit the unique needs and abilities of each student.

Our founder Sunny and many of our master teachers have trained directly from disciples of Sri T. Krishnamacharya in India, so that you can rest assured you’re sharing authentic wisdom passed down by yogis for thousands of years

As our gift to you all our Level 1 RYT-200 students also receive one free short online course – your choice of Yin Yoga, Pre + Post Natal Yoga, Meditation or Kids + Teens Yoga – to add to your skills and increase your options upon graduation with extra in-demand modalities.

What is the Role of Yoga Alliance and Yoga Alliance International ?

Yoga Alliance (YA) and Yoga Alliance International (YAI) are international organizations that serve as a standard-setting and accrediting yoga body, providing guidelines and requirements for YTT programs and registering qualified yoga teachers around the world.

While not mandatory, a YA and YAI International registration is widely recognized and valued within the yoga community, providing a level of credibility and assurance for both teachers and students. They offer resources, continuing education opportunities, and a platform for connecting and networking within the yoga industry.

Overall, the role of YA and YAI is to support the integrity and growth of the yoga profession while maintaining high standards of education and professional conduct.

Our Santosha Bali, Byron Bay, Sri Lanka and Online Level 1 courses are YA and YAI International accredited RYT-200 trainings – meaning you are able to register as a RYT-200 Yoga Teacher immediately upon graduation from your online or in-person studies – qualifying you to teach in gyms and local studios around the world.

Curriculum and Learning Components

Learning the History and Philosophy of Yoga

In our Bali, Byron Bay, Sri Lanka and Online trainings participants delve into the rich history and philosophy of yoga, exploring its ancient roots and philosophical underpinnings. We study texts such as the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, gaining insights into the origins, evolution, and diverse paths of yoga. Learning the history and philosophy deepens trainees’ understanding of its spiritual and philosophical aspects, providing a broader context for their self practice and teaching.

Deepening Your Personal Practice

Our YTT offers a unique opportunity to deepen your self practice. You will engage in regular and focused practice of asanas, pranayama (breathwork), and meditation. Through dedicated self-reflection, you will explore and refine their alignment, breath awareness, and mindfulness. This deepening of your self practice allows you to experience the transformative power of yoga firsthand, developing a more profound connection with your body, minds, and spirit.

Study of Yoga Asanas (Poses)

A significant part of our training involves the study of asanas. Trainees learn about the alignment, benefits, modifications, and sequencing of various asanas, from foundational poses to more advanced ones. Explore the mechanics of each pose, understanding how it affects the body, breath, and energy. Through practice and study, you will gain a comprehensive understanding of asanas, enabling you to guide others safely and effectively in their practice.

Understanding Yoga Anatomy and Physiology

On our program you will dedicate time to learning yoga anatomy and physiology. Trainees learn about the musculoskeletal system, the body’s energy systems, and how they relate to yoga practice. You will study the alignment and engagement of muscles and joints in different poses, as well as the benefits and potential risks associated with each pose. A firm grasp of yoga anatomy and physiology allows trainees to guide their students safely, make appropriate modifications, and offer individualized support based on the unique needs of each practitioner.

Mastering Breathing Techniques (Pranayama) and Meditation

Breathing techniques, known as pranayama, and meditation are essential components of our YTT. Our students explore various pranayama techniques to control and direct the breath, understanding the effects of different breathing practices on the body and mind.

You will delve into meditation, learning different meditation techniques and appreciating their benefits for cultivating mindfulness, concentration, and inner peace. Mastering pranayama and meditation equips you with tools to deepen your own practice and guide students in incorporating these transformative practices into their yoga classes.

Learning Teaching Methodologies and Practice Teaching

Teaching methodologies and teaching practice form a vital part of our intensive Bali, Byron Bay, Sri Lanka or Online trainings. We teach effective methods for structuring and sequencing classes, adapting to different levels and needs of students, and creating a safe and inclusive space for practice.

You will also gain practical experience through hands-on teaching sessions, leading portions of a yoga class under the guidance and feedback of experienced master instructors. Through teaching methodologies and practice leading classes, trainees develop the skills and confidence to create meaningful and engaging experiences for their future students.

Introduction to the Business of Yoga

Our YTT programs often include an introduction to the business of yoga, recognizing the importance of equipping trainees with foundational knowledge on the professional and entrepreneurial aspects of being a yoga instructor. Trainees gain insights into building a sustainable yoga career, attracting and retaining students, and navigating the evolving landscape of the yoga world. By introducing the business of yoga, trainees develop a well-rounded skill set that enables them to not only share their passion but also successfully manage and promote their yoga teaching endeavors.

Whats are the Benefits of Yoga Teacher Training courses?

Personal Growth and Transformation

One of the significant benefits of YTT is the personal growth and transformation it offers. As our students immerse themselves in the teachings and practices of yoga, they embark on a journey of self-discovery, self-reflection, and self-transformation. Through introspection, mindfulness, and the exploration of yogic philosophy, you will gain valuable insights into yourself, cultivating a deeper connection with your authentic self and enhancing your personal health and well-being.

Deepening Knowledge and Understanding of Yoga

Gain a comprehensive and in-depth exploration of yoga, allowing you to deepen your mastery and appreciation of this ancient practice. This expanded awareness not only enriches your individual practice but also equips you with the expertise to guide others on their journey.

Becoming a Certified Yoga Instructor

One of the tangible benefits is the opportunity to become a accredited yoga instructor. Upon successful completion of the yoga teacher training program and meeting the graduation requirements, trainees receive a yoga teacher certification that recognizes their dedication, awareness, and competence as yoga instructors. This certification opens doors to teaching opportunities in a yoga studio, fitness centers, retreats, and other settings, allowing trainees to share the transformative benefits of yoga with others.

Joining a Global Community of Yoga Instructors

YTTs offer the chance to join a vibrant and supportive global community of yoga teachers. Trainees connect with others who share a love for yoga and a commitment to personal growth and wellness.

We have an online Santosha community, providing a platform for ongoing learning, collaboration, and support, where trainees can exchange ideas, seek guidance, and forge lifelong friendships with like-minded souls from around the world.

The benefits of a YTT extend beyond the acquisition of teaching skills. It offers personal growth, deepens expertise and awareness, provides the opportunity to become a certified instructor, and connects trainees to a global community of new friends. Through this transformative journey, trainees not only enhance their own lives but also become catalysts for positive change in the lives of others.

Frequently Asked Questions About Our Bali, Byron Bay, Sri Lanka and Online 200-Hour Courses

How proficient do I need to be at yoga to join the Santosha YTT?

During the Level 1 RYT-200 program you will have asana practice every morning and afternoon. We recommend that students have some form of asana practice and are comfortable practicing daily. An advanced practitioner is not necessarily one who can move deeply into advanced poses; it is someone who comes to the mat with a level of maturity, a willingness to learn, and an appreciation of the limits of their own body. This course is not only meant for aspiring instructors. It’s also for people who want to take their practice to a deeper level and share an incredible experience with like-minded souls.

Will I be accepted into the Santosha YTT?

Yes, we believe that all people are deserving of changing their lives! Subsequently, the only prerequisite is a sincere desire in your heart to transform and grow. Can I join even if I have injuries or am not that flexible?

At Santosha, we believe that yoga is for everybody and all bodies; and therefore we teach safe and sustainable practices for all yogis. You don’t need a perfect, injury-free body to be a teacher, or to join our course. Instructors who have had injuries themselves are often better at being aware of students’ limitations with flexibility or mobility and keeping them safe.

Can I join the course even if I feel nervous about teaching?

Yes, of course! It’s normal to feel hesitant about starting something new. Many of our students come into the feeling fear of teaching, public speaking, or doing something new. We take care to create a supportive and accepting space like no other you have experienced. We’ll work with you where you’re at to help you build the confidence and skills you’ll need to share what you have learned (if that’s your goal).

I am older and cannot do all the postures. Can I still join you?

At Santosha, we believe that yoga is for everybody and all bodies – and that your practice should meet you where you are at. It’s no problem if you cannot access certain poses. There is no age barrier to accessing the incredible benefits of yoga practices and sharing them with others through yoga teaching! We are getting an increasing number of students joining us in their 50s, 60s, and beyond on the YTT and stepping up to teach yoga – and we hope to see more!

I feel a bit nervous! Should I Still Do It?

Yes! This probably means you are ready to step into something new but you just need that extra encouragement to make the next brave step. We are here to offer this to you! You are welcome to email or WhatsApp us and let us know about anything standing in the way of following your dreams, and we can happily provide extra support – both before and during your time with us on the YTT – in a way that best suits YOUR individual nature and strengths.
