8 Reasons Why Sri Lanka is a Perfect Yoga Teacher Training Destination

1. You want to discover Lonely Planet’s Top Country for 2019.. before everyone else does!

With its untouched golden beaches, atmospheric train rides through tea-carpeted hills and ancient temples to admire, it’s no wonder Sri Lanka was Lonely Planet’s top Travel Country for 2019.

Experiences wildlife, such as the 300-strong elephant gathering at Minneriya National Park, thousand-year old Buddhist monuments, rainforests and parks teaming with exotic flora and fauna, hiking and train travel through tea plantations, with sweeping views of lush green hills and waterfalls as far as the eye can see.

And of course we couldn’t overlook the coastline, with its coconut palm fringed beaches and soft golden sand. To make the most of this jewel in Sri Lanka’s crown, we have secured a perfect spot for our training – Hiriketiya – a horseshoe of shimmering sand and surf. Close to prime surf spots and right on the beachfront, our Sri Lanka Yoga Teacher training venue Dots Bay House is a stylish and peaceful oasis, perfect for yoga, meditation and learning. And some fun in the sun of course!

We know visiting a new place can be a little daunting on your own – which is why we have teamed up with Dots. 2. You want a safe and easy destination for Solo Adventurers

Sri Lanka’s friendly and helpful locals make this a dream destination for solo travellers. Sri Lanka was even recently voted Top Global Safety Destination For Women Travellers by The People’s Daily newspaper of China.

“Ambassador for Sri Lanka Dr. Karunasena Kodituwakku, thanked the People’s Daily for recognizing Sri Lanka’s commitment to the safety of tourists visiting the country, particularly women travellers who are rapidly becoming a strong demographic in the tourism sector.

Stressing on the importance of safety as a deciding factor in selecting a travel destination, Dr. Kodituwakku said that Sri Lankan people are hospitable, friendly and ever ready to provide a helping hand to travellers who need assistance. He also noted that tourist places are well organized, with dedicated staff to guide and help tourists enjoy their visits.”

Having visited Sri Lanka as a solo female traveler and meeting many kind and helpful people wherever I went, I could not agree more! As the region is still growing, you will find you make friends and receive personalised service way beyond what you may be used to in longer established travel destinations. The smiles, stories and memories you make with the genuine and generous people of this lovely place will likely end up being your favourite souvenir of your time here!

3. You LOVE surf, sand, sea and sun

If you love beaches and surfing then we guarantee Sri Lanka will Blow. Your. Mind. The stunning beaches are pristine, with soft sand and coconut palms lining the shore. Paddling in the warm waves while watching the sun set setting over the Indian ocean as the scent of jasmine fills the air is a heavenly experience worthy of any beach-lovers bucket list.

For surf fans, Hiriketiya Beach (the location for our Sri Lanka Level 1 Yoga Teacher Training)  in the south of Sri Lanka is one of the many gorgeous beaches which make up Sri Lanka’s coastline. With several surf breaks, surf hire, and lessons can be arranged right on the beach. For non-surfers, the sea is perfect for swimming and there are many fun cafes dotting the shore to sit and watch the world go by. Stunning sunsets in the evening make a gorgeous backdrop for your end-of-day dip.

4. You want to experience a country rich in culture and spirituality

One very special aspect of Sri Lanka is its vast cultural diversity. Sri Lankan culture includes customs and rituals dating back to more than 2,000 years ago, handed down from generation to generation.

There are four religions in Sri Lanka. The majority of Sri Lankans are Buddhist, while others are Hindu, Muslim or Christian. Visitors will find Buddhist temples, Hindu kovils, Muslim mosques and Christian churches throughout the island.

With such a vibrant mix of cultures and beliefs, the fusion has created a land full of colour and custom.

Colourful shrines are found in even the smallest villages, while larger cities boast elaborate temples and religious festivities, such as the Temple of the Tooth in Kandy – which houses the relic of the tooth of the Buddha.

All four religions in Sri Lanka have celebrations and festivities and most of these are public holidays. The most unusual, although memorable holiday is Poya, an island-wide celebration of the full moon – which is a public holiday every single month! Depending on the month you can expect colourful lights and decorations and temples bursting with worshippers.

The Sri Lankan way of life is very simple and filled with humility and happiness. Sri Lankans have a very great sense in appreciating the simple things in life such as nature.

For our yoga teacher trainees the opportunity to experience a land where spiritually and daily life are so closely interwoven is one of the many charms of this beautiful country.

5. You are keen to experience the healing benefits of Ayurveda

“Ayurveda is the science and yoga is the practice of the science.”

Combing “ayuh” (life) with “veda” (science), Ayurveda is known as the science of life and is considered to be the sister of yoga. Both originate as part of a greater system of Vedic knowledge. It is one of the world’s oldest holistic wellness systems and based on restoring balance between mind, body and spirit.

Both yoga and ayurveda advocate for the regular practice of pranayama and meditation as well as the use of herbs, body purification procedures, food, chanting of mantras for physical and mental health.

Both recognise that keeping the body healthy is of vital importance and offer a truly holistic method for health. Ayurveda focuses on the maintenance of all systems of the body to avoid illness – not just on fixing symptoms once they appear. For this reason all yoga teachers can benefit from gaining a deeper knowledge of Aryuvedic principles.

Ayurvedic medicine has been passed down from generation to generation for 5,000 years in Sri Lanka and practitioners are easily accessible.

Yogis visiting Sri Lanka are fortunate to be able to take advantage of the many opportunities to gain further knowledge of Ayurveda and take part in Aryurevdic healing. From rejuvenating massages to Panchakarma “five actions” – a longer cleansing and rejuvenating program for the body, mind and consciousness – our lucky students benefit from the accessibility of the many practitioners of this ancient healing modality in Sri Lanka.

6. You want to visit this amazing country – without the expensive price tag

We know that a Yoga Teacher Training is a once-in-a-lifetime experience… so we want you to experience a once-in-a-lifetime backdrop for your studies without breaking the bank! 7. You love travelling and exploring for cheap

Sri Lanka has an extensive network of trains and buses that traverse the country – meaning travel and exploration is accessible for all budgets. For just a few $US you can travel local style and visit beaches, cities, ancient monuments and temples, hill country and more.

The other advantage of this form of travel is that it’s a great way to see the real Sri Lanka, meeting the friendly and open citizens of this diverse land. At times crowded and boisterous, travel in Sri Lanka is never boring!

Local ‘tuk-tuks’ are also a very fun way to get from A to B, as you whizz past villages, paddy fields and beaches with the wind through your hair.

For longer distances – and for those who prefer their ride air-conditioned – local drivers are easily available and offer very competitive rates.
